Amazon is pausing construction of its 2nd headquarters in Virginia to further cut costs. Earlier this year, Amazon laid off 17,000 employees and thus needs less office space to accommodate them.
The first phase of construction is still being completed, a 22-story building that looks like a traditional office. However, construction of the helix-shaped office is on pause and will not resume until 2024.
HQ2 is not the only project that is halted for the time being. Some supermarkets operated by Amazon will shut down. Amazon is working to ensure that its physical stores satisfy the needs of its customers.
