The Canadian nonprofit organization, Victoria Hand Project (VHP), is partnering with BASF Forward AM and UltiMaker to expand access to high-quality prosthetics for amputees in war-torn Ukraine. VHP utilizes advanced 3D printing technology and materials to create affordable and customizable prosthetic arms, known as the Victoria Hands, that not only meet functional requirements but also empower users with resilience and durability.
Since its establishment in 2015, VHP has formed clinical partnerships in 11 countries, relying on the support of generous donors to bring hope and restore independence to individuals facing limb loss. By leveraging the expertise of trusted additive manufacturing collaborators like BASF Forward AM and UltiMaker, VHP is able to provide sustainable prosthetic care worldwide.
The "Hands for Ukraine" campaign aims to raise $200,000 to support on-demand prosthetic care for individuals living in Ukraine. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 40,000 injuries as of January 30, 2023, with an estimated 25% to 35% of these cases requiring specialized medical support as amputees.
In addition, the region already has 400,000 existing amputees who lack access to prosthetic care. VHP's successful pilot project in Ukraine has laid the groundwork for long-term partnerships, focusing on training local prosthetists and technology experts to 3D print, assemble, and provide Victoria Hands as needed.
The full expansion into Ukraine includes equipping partner sites in Lviv and Vinnytsia with 3D printing and scanning tools, as well as supplies for prosthetic fittings. The campaign aims to fund high-quality prosthetic care for 100 Ukrainian amputees initially, with the potential to increase production if fundraising efforts exceed the set goal.
The Victoria Hand Project, together with BASF Forward AM and UltiMaker, is dedicated to supporting their mission of delivering prosthetic hands to those in need. By utilizing UltiMaker's 3D printing ecosystem, clinicians can print parts on-demand, improving prosthetic support within their communities. The integration of 3D printing technology in prosthetic care aims to address the needs of individuals with limb loss or differences, promoting empowerment, inclusivity, and overall well-being.
