China is tightening its regulation of social media and has launched a targeted campaign to eliminate more than 100,000 fake social media accounts, reports the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC). In particular, fake accounts impersonating news service providers and spreading false information are being targeted.
Since April 6, a total of 107,000 accounts and 835,000 false information contents have been deleted. The CAC has had a strict censorship policy since 2014. In the case of viral hashtags that are sensitive to Beijing, automatic censorship occurs, with preference given to state-initiated hashtags.
The CAC announced that the deleted accounts were impersonating official news service providers and using artificial intelligence to spread misinformation. This practice harms the public and businesses. China is taking an extremely cautious approach to the use of artificial intelligence, especially after the announcement of new measures in the industry when Alibaba unveiled its own chatbot.
