Introducing: NFTs

Writer's picture: Alexander FähAlexander Fäh

For quite some time they have been relevant - NFTs. Everyone has heard that a picture of a monkey was sold for several million dollars. But what is this picture exactly and why should you buy (n)one.

First of all, NFT is the abbreviation for Non-Fungible Token. This means that you cannot convert an image, audio file or video. For example, you have a 100$ note. You can change this for 5 x 20$ or 10 x 10$. So you can convert the 100$ any way you want. This is not the case with an NFT. That means you can't get the value back in another format.

Also, NFTs are not bought with FIAT currencies, but with cryptocurrencies. The most popular and well-known cryptocurrency to buy the images is Ethereum. If the gas fees are too high for you, you can also pay with Solana. If someone decides to buy an NFT, then a "smart contract" is automatically made and confirmed, which is stored on the blockchain.

Now you ask yourself why you should buy such a picture and why. After all, you can take a screenshot and there you have it. The whole thing is not that simple. Because there is a contract "signed" when buying an NFT. This contract provides a certificate of authenticity and proof of ownership. A comparison: you take a picture of the Mona Lisa, print it and hang it on your wall. So does your picture have the same value as the real Mona Lisa? Probably not, unless you had stolen the original.

However, NFTs do not meet the requirements of the Copyright Act. This is because they are considered personal intellectual creations. This means that you can't sue someone if you know that a person has taken a screenshot of your NFT. So don't be provoked if someone screenshots your NFT Twitter profile picture.
