Microsoft today released an Early Access version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for certain Chromebooks. Microsoft did not say when the game will definitely be released. Currently, only high-end Chromebooks can run the game. After all bugs have been fixed, the game will be released for all Chromebooks, according to Microsoft.

Until now, you could only play Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks with a valid school license or Office 365 education account. You can also run the Java edition of Minecraft through Linux, but it is more complex to launch the game.

Microsoft is releasing Minecraft for Chromebooks to show regulators that the company is not launching its games for itself, but on other platforms as well. It is a strategic move for Microsoft to finally acquire Activision.
