President Biden appoints a high-profile expert team, led by Google-Alphabet Chairman John Hennessy, to promote research and development of innovative computer chips.
The team will appoint a board of trustees for the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC), which will make politically sensitive decisions, including the selection of research facilities' location.
The efforts aim to expand domestic chip manufacturing, create high-paying jobs, and reduce dependence on major producers in China and Taiwan, giving the United States an advantage in advanced technologies.

The Biden administration has announced the selection of Google-Alphabet Chairman John Hennessy and four other technology industry experts to assist in the research and development of next-generation computer chips. This move marks a significant milestone in the government's efforts to expand domestic chip manufacturing, create high-paying jobs, and reduce dependence on major producers in China and Taiwan.
President Joe Biden recognizes the importance of chips in driving the advanced technologies that will power future military systems and aims to position the United States at the forefront of this field. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a chip shortage, leading to disruptions in industries such as automotive, appliances, and gaming consoles. Economists attribute the rise in consumer prices, in part, to this chip shortage.
To advance research on future chips, the government established the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC). The selected experts, led by John Hennessy, will now appoint a board of trustees to oversee the center. This nonprofit board will make politically sensitive decisions, including the selection of the center's research facilities' location within the United States.
The NSTC aims to be an innovation engine, supporting and expanding U.S. leadership in semiconductor research, design, engineering, and advanced manufacturing for decades to come. Through this public-private partnership, it is expected that the development of groundbreaking computer chips will be accelerated, strengthening U.S. technological sovereignty.
John Hennessy, not only the chairman of Alphabet but also a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Stanford University, brings his extensive experience in the technology industry to this crucial initiative.
The expert team also includes notable individuals such as Janet Foutty, Principal at Deloitte Consulting, Jason Matheny, CEO of RAND Corp, Don Rosenberg, venture capitalist at Anzu Partners and former Qualcomm executive, and Brenda Wilkerson, president of an educational nonprofit organization.
With the establishment of this high-profile expert team, the Biden administration underscores its commitment to building a robust domestic chip manufacturing industry, creating high-quality jobs, and ensuring U.S. technological dominance.
