According to rumors from Zed Wang on Twitter, NVIDIA has halted production of the RTX 3080 with 12 gigabytes of VRAM. Not even six months after the graphics card was launched.
For one thing, NVIDIA's new Lovelace graphics cards are due for release. These are supposed to surpass the RTX 3090 Ti by quite a bit. Therefore, it is hardly worthwhile for NVIDIA to still produce the 12 gigabyte version of the 3080.
The high price is also a thorn in the customers' side. The 12 gigabyte version currently costs more than the 3090 at MSRP, although the 3080 with 12 gigabytes can't do much more than the normal 3080, which is currently available starting at $900.
However, if you don't want to give up the 12 gigabytes, you'd better get an RTX 3080 Ti, which is currently available starting at $1200. For $300 more, you can get an RTX 3090 with 24 gigabytes of VRAM.
