Prusa Introduces World's First UL-Certified Self-Extinguishing PETG Filament

  • Prusa introduces the world's first UL-certified self-extinguishing PETG filament - Prusament PETG V0.

  • With its unique ability to slow down and extinguish flames, it offers impressive 3D printing results and increased safety.

  • The UL certification ensures legal compliance and makes it an ideal choice for businesses requiring certified products and DIY enthusiasts looking to create secure electronic devices.

Prusa Revolutionizes 3D Printing with Innovative Prusament PETG V0.

Prusa, one of the leading manufacturers in the 3D printing industry, has once again pushed the boundaries of technology and proudly presents the world's first UL-certified self-extinguishing PETG filament - Prusament PETG V0.

This groundbreaking filament not only delivers impressive 3D printing results but also features a crucial safety function that sets it apart from other filaments.

The term "self-extinguishing" means that the material has mechanisms that slow down and eventually stop the flame after it ignites. In the case of Prusament PETG V0, it forms a carbonized crust on the surface when burning, blocking the oxygen supply and eventually extinguishing the fire. On the other hand, fire-resistant materials are more challenging to ignite in the first place.

The UL certification is a significant milestone and a testament to the talent and skills of the Prusament team. UL is a global safety company that tests various products (materials and mainly electrical equipment) for different levels of safety certifications that are relevant in both practical and legal contexts. The UL certification guarantees unbiased results for every tested product and serves as legal proof of the product's compliance worldwide.

Prusament PETG V0 underwent testing according to the IEC 60695-11-10 standard and obtained the UL94 V0 classification (for both available colors - natural white and jet black). The UL94 method applies to various plastic materials and determines whether the material extinguishes or spreads the flame after ignition.

In the UL94 V0 category where Prusament PETG V0 was tested, it achieved the best possible result - extinguishing in less than 10 seconds after both ignitions.

The certification as a self-extinguishing filament not only provides practical benefits by significantly reducing the fire hazard but also has legal implications. With this certification, obtaining the certification of parts or products as self-extinguishing becomes much easier and requires fewer tests when the material itself has the proper certification.

Of course, certain rules set by Prusa and UL still need to be followed. For example, the models must be printed with the Original Prusa MK3S+ printer and a 0.4 mm nozzle (at 0.2 mm layer height). The certification applies only to objects thicker than 0.75 mm (2 perimeters). Adhering to these rules is crucial to ensure the desired properties.

Prusament PETG V0 stands out not only due to its certification but also for its environmentally friendly characteristics. Unlike other self-extinguishing filaments, it does not contain toxic substances like halogens that could be released during combustion. This makes it not only safer for use in electronic devices but also more environmentally friendly.

This groundbreaking innovation by Prusa has diverse applications. In the business world, companies requiring certified products can now quickly create prototypes with the necessary fire safety requirements.

Furthermore, Prusament PETG V0 is highly recommended for DIY enthusiasts and hobbyists who create electronic devices themselves. With this self-extinguishing filament, they can ensure that their handmade products offer maximum safety.

Currently, Prusament PETG V0 is available in white and jet black colors, each on a 1 kg spool priced at 54.99 USD/54.99 EUR (incl. VAT). Compared to Original Prusament PETG, PETG V0 exhibits slightly lower tenacity and layer-to-layer adhesion, and it is more hygroscopic. Therefore, it is advisable to keep the filament as dry as possible. If it does absorb moisture, it is recommended to dry it for 6 hours at 55 °C before use.

The UL certification of Prusament PETG V0 currently applies only to printing with the Original Prusa MK3S+, but the company is working to obtain certification for the MK4 and XL as well.
