Climeworks has been working since 2009 on removing CO2 from the atmosphere and then storing it in the ground. With the help of a process, the gas is turned into a solid rock that can be permanently stored in the ground.
Climeworks' largest customers include Microsoft, Stripe and Shopify. The companies pay a certain amount per ton of CO2 and Climeworks then removes it. Individuals can also offset their CO2 emissions with Climeworks.
36,000 tons can be captured and processed each year, which is a small fraction of all emissions, 36.3 billion tons per year.
